Why has it taken National six years to figure out the problems with housing in NZ? I don’t have a particular problem with social housing, providing it works. But the fact that Nick Smith is involved leaves some doubt. National should have been building more state houses.. Only the state can handle the sheer numbers needed.
Working families could possibly handle a rent to buy scheme. That cuts out the necessity of a deposit. Social housing is not necessarily better than the state. Under a variety of names, Housing NZ has been providing social housing since the mid-1930’s. Other social housing providers would supplement Housing NZ, not replace it. Let’s not get carried away. This is my opinion in any case.
